Five Miles from the Sea

Level 17 Artspace invites you to the opening and exhibition of:

Five Miles from the Sea
Curator: Geoff Tolchard

Artists: George Alamidis, Terri Brooks, Caz Guiney, Jodi Heffernan, Kari Henrikse, Greg Neville, Kirsten Perry, Karenne Rees, Adriane Strampp, Maria Thompson, Geoff Tolchard, Peter Wegner

This exhibition is titled Five Miles from the Sea as it investigates the impact of the incursion of non-indigenous peoples – and the marks they have inflicted – upon Australian soil. In deploying their chosen mediums the artists are asked to visually interpret a specific reference point they identify as being five miles from the sea. This will be accompanied by a Google Earth image so viewers can place the artist’s chosen areas into a geographic context.

Who lives five miles from the sea, and how does the impact of settlement appear in the eyes of the twelve participating artists? With some artists beginning their lives in different parts of the globe – and since chosen to make Australia their home – it will be interesting to observe whether their perspectives differ to those who were born and bred here: will it reveal any notions about being a ‘multicultural’ country, or a society that is considered as being Twenty-First Century?

Hope we see you there!

Creating an Online Portfolio

Article

Link to article

"One of the questions many students, designers and creative professionals often ask is 'What is the quickest and easiest way for me to get my folio online for people to see?'.

In the past 10 or so years, since the digital revolution really began in earnest, a number of web-based platforms have been developed by companies and parties the globe over allowing creative individuals from all backgrounds the ability to set up their own online spaces whereby they can showcase and discuss their work.

It is only really in the past year or so though that some of these platforms have really established themselves as cutting edge - extremely easy to use, cheap (if not free) to set up, open to endless variances of customisation, technically sound and clean and seamless in their execution. There are however undoubtedly still some fairly average products out there...."

Work In Motion: on Migration, Mobility and Labour
"From The Red house program information"
Media art exhibition curated by Per Pegelow, following a concept of Etta Gerdes and Per Pegelow; curator of the commissions to the show - Yovo Panchev

The current change in global living conditions by new ways of communication and transport - often called globalization - is enabled by certain developments within the media. The view of this development with all its social and economic issues is represented by mass media in a way that leads to a phenomenon Jean Baudrillard calls "hyperreality", where the perception of mass media products starts to replace the independent view on the common reality. Baudrillard suggests that the "production of alternative media" is a way back to a clear and more independent perception of reality.
The media works of this exhibition do exactly this - (re-)producing a clear view on social lives within the European and North American nations in times of rapid "globalisation". The media art exhibition pools various artistic approaches in a pulsating art show.

In the programme: WorldWideWalks Sofia (Peter d'Agostino, United States, interactive installation), I.D. (George Alamidis, Greece, installation of 140 ID cards), In - Formation (Aufstellung) (Harun Farocki, Germany, video), Losers and Winners (Ulrike Franke and Michael Loeken, Germany, documentary film about the deconstrucktion of a coal factory), etc. With the special participation of Stanimir Genov and Vikenti Komitski. In partnership with The Red House the Interactive Arts e.V.

work on paper (under construction)

The starting point for these works is my digital collection of correspondence from the past. Letters, notes, stamps and envelops amidst other things.

I find the handwriting particularly interesting because my own lacks any of the refined qualities found in the collection. Visual tension is created between the personal message and the stamps and other approval signs. This visual tension becomes much more sinister when you note that the information contained has been checked and approved by a government sensor.
